Browns Trade Dobbs to Arizona
In a surprising move the Cleveland Browns are trading quarterback Josh Dobbs to the Arizona Cardinals. This comes after a full day of news and talk around the Browns quarterback position. The Browns will receive a 5th-round pick in exchange for Dobbs and a 7th-round pick.
The team announced that they were releasing Kellen Mond who fell to the bottom of the depth chart throughout the preseason despite his decent play. It appears however that Mond will stick around after it is being reported that the team pulled him off waivers after the trade developed.
Rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson has been the star of the preseason for the Browns and has generated buzz across the league. He now becomes the backup to Deshaun Watson and would be one injury away from seeing snaps.
For Dobbs, he will now have an opportunity to start games in Arizona. Starting quarterback Kyler Murray is still recovering from his late-season ACL tear and will be out for some time. Dobbs will have familiarity with the offense as former Browns quarterback coach Drew Petzing was hired by the Cardinals in the offseason to become the team's offensive coordinator.
It will be an opportunity for Dobbs but also a tremendous challenge to lead a football team who will certainly be in the running for next year's number one draft pick. The trade comes hours after the Cardinals shipped out two talented contributors on their roster who were in the final year of their rookie deals, trading away Isaiah Simmons, who heads to the Giants and Josh Jones, who is on his way to Houston.
The most surprising element is the move comes on the same day that Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Dobbs was ahead of DTR on the depth chart moving into the season.
